New protein structure reveals cancer signaling mechanism and potential drug target

Malignant melanoma is one of the most dangerous forms of cancer. Around half of melanomas and about 7% of all other cancers carry a mutation in a protein called BRAF. This mutation disrupts the regulation of cell division, causing cells to multiply in an uncontrolled manner. Researchers at PSI and the University of Zurich have now examined the BRAF protein in greater detail, gaining valuable insights into its complex regulation.

Hemodialysis mortality risks by blood type

Do you know your blood type? It is important information used for blood transfusions, but few realize that blood types could also be linked to disease risks. In the general population, people with blood type O have been reported to have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular mortality. Other noncardiovascular conditions are also associated with ABO blood types, such as certain cancers and infectious diseases. However, these findings do not take into consideration hemodialysis patients, who face higher risks than the general population.

US-India satellite delivers data, reveals 'hummingbird' in Antarctica

As of July 20, the public can access data from the two powerful radar instruments aboard the NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite. Teams in the United States and India will release files processed from the satellite's L-band and S-band radars on an ongoing basis, helping researchers and other users track the movement of Earth's land and ice masses, monitor changes in ecosystems like forests and wetlands and respond to natural hazards such as landslides and earthquakes.

AI tool predicts how DNA sequences switch on genes across different cell types

Deep learning approaches have transformed how scientists predict the activity and function of DNA sequences in the genome. A new AI tool called Corgi (Context-aware Regulatory Genomics Inference), developed by Martin Vingron's bioinformatics group at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics allows researchers to predict how the genome behaves across different cell types. The findings could help improve efforts to mimic the activity of cells virtually, with potential applications in basic research and medicine.
