The 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines were associated with 50% estimated effectiveness against COVID-19-associated emergency department and urgent care encounters among immunocompetent US adults. They were also linked to an estimated 55% effectiveness against COVID-19-associated hospitalization, providing added protection beyond existing immunity from prior infection or vaccination.
Found in volcanic soil in Albay, the newly classified organism belongs to a bacterial group responsible for producing many of today’s antibiotics, underscoring the Philippines’ potential role in
International, MNA | France on Wednesday announced the first confirmed case of Ebola identified on its territory, a doctor who had flown back from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is fighting a major outbreak.
Researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) have identified a specialized population of immune cells that play a central role in driving abnormal tissue growth in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), offering new insight into disease progression and potential treatment strategies.
The availability of genetic testing for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for people with a family member diagnosed with the disease is expected to greatly increase the number of clinic visits to specialized ALS centers over the next decade, according to a study published June 24, 2026, in Neurology Genetics, an official journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Microalgae-mediated biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) offers a sustainable alternative for nanomaterial synthesis; however the metabolic mechanisms underlying the reduction of HAuCl4 and the formation of AuNPs remain unclear. In this study, the green microalga Oocystis borgei was employed to synthesize AuNPs, and associated cellular metabolic alterations were systematically examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics. TEM revealed AuNP accumulation in the chloroplasts, accompanied by substructural disorganization. Metabolomic profiling identified 1,871 upregulated and 1,681 downregulated ions in positive ion mode, and 1,092 upregulated and 1,032 downregulated ions in negative ion mode. Among the significantly upregulated metabolites, fatty acyls, glycerophospholipids, and oxidanesulfonic acid were associated with lipid peroxidation and membrane remodeling. In contrast, downregulated metabolites, including carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and chlorophyll derivatives, indicated suppressed growth and metabolic activity. The differentially abundant metabolites(DAMs) were enriched in purine metabolism, porphyrin and chlorophyll biosynthesis, and plant hormone signaling pathway. Notably, porphyrin and chlorophyll degradation and amino acid/protein metabolism suppression correlated with growth inhibition, whereas oxidised lipids (19-hydroxy-nonadecanoic acid) and stress-responsive metabolites (brassinosteroids and carotenoids) facilitated AuNP synthesis. These findings elucidate the metabolic trade-offs in O. borgei during HAuCl4 detoxification and AuNP biogenesis, enhancing our mechanistic understanding of algal-based nanomaterial synthesis.
A UK Biobank study of nearly 390,000 people mapped 251 NMR-derived plasma metabolic traits against hundreds of health traits, prevalent diseases, and future disease outcomes. The atlas revealed tens of thousands of replicated associations, showed stronger prediction for selected short-term and cardiometabolic outcomes, and identified putative causal links that may guide future precision medicine research.
France recorded its first domestic confirmed Ebola case this Wednesday, according to the French Health Ministry and local newspaper Le Parisien. The infected individual is a doctor who just came back from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic
