Professor lives truth of Māori health inequity

AUT professor of Māori health Jacquie Kidd (Ngāpuhi) has spent a lifetime standing with whānau Māori, who battle a health system designed for others and are twice as likely to die from cancer as Pākehā. Now 62 and facing her own terminal cancer diagnosis, Jacquie has written her story to understand herself and her whakapapa better, and to share what she’s learned working with people who are dying after being diagnosed too late. Most importantly, she argues that a health and social system designed around whānau Māori allows everyone to flourish.

From specialist to self-refer

Genetic testing for hereditary cancer risk in women has, for much of its clinical history, been available only through a referral pathway involving a GP, a clinical genetics team and a family history review meeting specific risk thresholds. The arrival of direct-access private testing has changed this significantly. Women who would not historically have qualified for NHS genetic testing under current criteria can now access clinically validated hereditary cancer genetic testing through private providers, often without waiting months for a specialist appointment.
