What families should know about hand, foot and mouth disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common contagious viral illness that often affects infants and children younger than five, but people of any age can become infected. According to Dr. Stanley Enebeli, Medical Health Officer for the region, the illness is often caused by the Coxsackie virus. “It causes fever, mouth sores, and a skin rash on the hands and feet,” Enebeli explained. The illness is more common during the warmer months and typically causes mild symptoms that last about seven to 10 days. Symptoms and treatment Symptoms can include fever, poor appetite, sore throat, painful mouth sores and a rash that commonly appears on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The rash can also appear on the buttocks, and blisters may develop. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/des-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1632167742396-bbm1'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1632167742396]) s.setTargeting('story_id', 'what-families-should-know-about-hand-foot-and-mouth-disease'); s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); Hand, foot and mouth disease spreads from person to person through direct or indirect contact with nose and throat secretions, fluid from blisters caused by the rash or stool from an infected person. It is not spread to or from pets or other animals. Enebeli says most people recover on their own with supportive care, including drinking plenty of fluids, staying hydrated and using pain relief when needed. Soft foods can also help if mouth sores make eating uncomfortable. Complications from hand, foot and mouth disease are rare, but Enebeli says families should contact a healthcare provider if symptoms continue beyond 10 days or become severe. Washing soiled clothing and properly disposing of used facial tissues are additional steps that can help reduce the spread of the illness. Hand, foot and mouth disease can occur at any time of year, but cases are more common during the warmer months.
